The melt.  You know what it is.  You spend a good amount of time and effort creating your best flawless skin effect and then it starts to slide away as the day goes on.  All that work and then you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror later in the day and do a double take.  What the heck happened?!?!?!  No one likes that.

So, what is the #1 troublemaker for your summer look?  Layers.

Layers…  No, I’m not talking about your favorite cardi or jean jacket that you keep handy to battle air conditioning.  I’m talking about the layers you put on your face.  I normally have a layer each of serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, setting powder and then my contour products (highlight, contour and some blush).

All of these layers are awesome for making a great look worthy of Kim K or your favorite supermodel.  But, they don’t stand up to a day in the summer heat.  My best advice for battling the melt: cut down on your layers.  How do you do that without sacrificing your look?  Here are some of my favorite summer makeup tips to avoid the melt.

  1. Invest in a multitasker.  The easiest surefire way to battle the melt is to invest in a multitasker.  That’s usually going to be a BB or a CC cream.  This is a one step product to cover your serum, moisture, sunscreen and coverage needs. My go-to CC is from IT Cosmetics.  They even have a new CC bronzer that’s pretty darn awesome.
  2. Create your own mix.  Don’t really want to invest in a new multitasker?  I hear ya.  There are definitely times that a new pair of shoes call my name and I have to skimp somewhere else.  Have you tried mixing a few drops of your favorite foundation with your moisturizer?  Depending on how sheer your foundation is, you may find the results are fast and gorgeous!
  3. Skip the setting powder.  Eek!  I know, it’s terrifying if you have oily skin like I do.  In the summer this extra layer may be working against your best intentions.  I always keep blotting papers in my purse to battle the grease. Lately I’ve been grabbing the 24/7 Oil Control Blotting Tissues from Zon Cosmetics. I grab them at Ulta by the handful to stock my purse, desk and car.  Yeah, they’re that good and reasonably priced.

What do you do to avoid the melt?  I’d love to know!
